Cutting Board Home Signs!
I saw a similar idea
to this on YouTube and I really liked it but I altered mine to be a tad
brighter and more me! The YouTube version was farmhouse style but it seemed
dark in color and rather plain, so I livened it up a bit!
I bought 4 white cutting boards at Dollar Tree but really any color will do as you will paint them, just make sure they have a handle with a hole for easy hanging. Now after washing and drying them I painted them with a few layers of truffle brown chalk paint and left to dry. Now I applied a crackle medium to this versus the glue method I have used previously, either way works well to create a crackle effect however I will say the store-bought crackle medium takes longer to dry. Once it was dry I painted over it with antique white chalk paint and left to dry and crackle. I painted and crackled both sides of the cutting boards so I could choose which sides came out better to be the ones you see displayed.
I took my sheets of burlap and roughly painted them with my truffle brown chalk paint and once they were dry I aligned them to the chalk painted cutting board at an angle and then hot glued them down. Each of the letters to spell out HOME I decided to not just paint them like the YouTube version but to instead decoupage them. I had these pretty antique looking sunflower napkins and so I played around until I knew what piece of the napkin I wanted on each letter and then I applied mod podge to the letter, one letter at a time I decoupage, then I applied the napkin, you remove by peeling all layers of the napkin leaving the first colored layer and lay it down and slowly smooth it out. I took my sand paper and slowly went around the sides of the letters to rub off the napkin so it was smooth. Now I learned a method of making it smooth and wrinkle and bubble less and that is to put a piece of parchment paper over it and using an iron I ironed over the parchment atop the decoupage item but be quick and remove the parchment immediately so it doesn’t stick together and you’ll see a crisper project. I am a tad impatient and iron it once it’s on whereas your supposed to leave time to dry but I do it my way but if you don’t want to worry about messing up the project you can allow more dry time upwards of 24 hours before ironing. After ironing I added another layer of mod podge to seal it. I think the small amount of color is still farmhouse but also kind of a Tuscany feel which I love.
Now taking the decoupage letters H.O.M.E I hot glued them to the burlap sheets on the cutting boards. Now to give it a little bit of added color I used these small green flowers I had. I hot glued them one to each burlap sheet on each cutting board but decided instead of having it in the same place on each cutting board I decided to have them one in each corner of the burlap in each, so like upper right, upper left, bottom left and bottom right. And to give it a cute homey like feel I took buttons I had and hot glued them to the center of the flowers, I decided on similar shaped buttons and a similar color scheme to match the overall colors of the project.
The last was to tie a twine bow to the handle neck of the cutting boards which was a challenge because I had to double wrap them as the twine was single layered and each bow isn’t perfect though I tried to make them look as close to each other as possible. Then taking command like strips with a small metal hook I applied to the wall next to my kitchen after seeing how I wanted them placed and voila!
This is a super cute decoration and it could spell out so many different things besides HOME like any thing for a kitchen or laundry room or just about anything! It was fun to do and it is one of my favorite décor items right now!
