Memory / Story Cubes!

This is one of my favorite gifts lately! I saw people using mod podge and pictures to create unique gifts and I wanted to give it a go. I bought a blank wooden cube at Michaels, they had 3 different sizes, and I chose some of my favorite pictures of mine. I decided to do pictures from dating, engagement and then marriage for the cube I made for me and my husband. Using our printer I printed out the pictures and cut them out, I had the pictures cropped to fit the cube prior to printing.

I didn’t want the blank cube color so to make it darker I took antique wax and applied it and rubbed it on to stain the wood. To make the images more antique I sprinkled water on them to make the ink run and also took wet paint brushes to the edges of the pictures to rip the images. Once dry I applied mod podge to the cube and put the pictures on one at a time. After each picture was applied, I would put parchment paper over top and using our iron I would iron it quickly. I learned this method on YouTube for removing the bubbles and wrinkles from decoupage projects. Your really supposed to give it more dry time before ironing but I’m impatient so I iron quickly but I remove the parchment paper immediately, so it doesn’t stick, though some times its ruined projects.

Once they were applied I then put more mod podge on top of the pictures and left to dry. However I did learn that computer printer pictures bleed more when mod podge is applied to them so use as little mod podge as necessary to seal the images.

This project is versatile and fun and easy to do! And what makes it a great gift well for my sister Lorinda and Brother-in-law Karl’s 20th Anniversary in December I used this same method and made them a cube with pictures they love from the last 20 years of marriage. I didn’t make theirs vintage like ours but theirs was great and my sister kept showing her friends the cube! They loved it along with the throw blanket I had gotten them made to commemorate their 20th anniversary. The last 3 pictures are of their cube! I will admit on their cube I had some frustrating parts where I tried to rush it and had to remove and redo a few of the pictures so definetly take your time and let the mod podge dry.

Also don't mind our minion friend on the couch in the pics, lol!
