Characters Treasure Chest Anniversary Gift!
My brother-in-law
and sister-in-law Andrew and Lacy’s first wedding anniversary was September 1st,
2019 so for their anniversary Anthony and I made them a really cool character
treasure box, a similar design I saw online but we added way more to this one. So
the first year is traditionally paper and so this incorporated that.
I bought a treasure chest box at Michaels and since they have coupons it is always great and comes in handy and we used a 40% off coupon to purchase the treasure box. I used a glossy white acrylic paint to paint the inside of the box and used a royal blue to paint the outside as the box was just basic wood when bought. I then mixed black, white, purple and I think another color together and kind of made it appear like the night skies as if like a nebula and applied that over the royal blue kind of playing around with it to see how I liked it and I really wound up liking the color of it. I then took the glossy white and applied stars to the skies on all sides.
Anthony’s job was to make a silhouette of Simba and Nala for one side and Jasmine and Aladdin for the other side as those are the favorite Disney Couples of Lacy and Andrew. Anthony drew the design out and then traced it onto the black scrapbook paper and cut it out. We used mod podge to apply it to the sides and then used mod podge over it to further seal it. After it was dry we used an x-acto knife and cut through it carefully so the box can open but the design looks flawless when shut as well.
I had bought some cardstock paper but to make it look aged I made some tea but with little water so it was darker and soaked the paper in it for a few minutes and removed it dried it with paper towels and if it needed more color I would re-soak it. On the largest piece of paper to further make it look like an old map I took a lighter and standing over the sink I carefully burnt the sides so it was charred and burnt. I then wrote, “Once in a while right in the middle of an ordinary life love gives us a fairytale” and at the bottom made a dotted line leading to a red X like a map and I think it was cute! Because of the curve in the top of the treasure chest I just pushed the paper up there and didn’t glue it or anything because it was a tight fit.
After that I decorated the box and I think that was my favorite part! So I lined the bottom of the chest in tan sand and I can’t remember I think I used at least one bag maybe even half of another to fill it to where I wanted. Then I scattered a few of these fish tank gems I had picked up at Petco onto the sand and pushed a few further down as if coming out of the sand like precious buried treasure. I then used gold pebbles and sea glass to add more character and added those in various spots around the gems. I added a few white and black pearls to the chest and even took two seashells turned them upside down and placed a white pearl in one and a black pearl in the other one.
Lastly I took a glass bottle and painted the black lid to a blue night sky nebular look like the treasure chest. I then added tan sand to the inside and I took a few mini seashells in green and burgundy or purple and added them to the inside along with a white and black pearl. I then took a piece of old looking scrapbook paper with what appears like cursive writing on it that I had used some for Anthony’s anniversary gift and cut and rolled it to look like a scroll and shut it with a pearl sticker and placed it inside the bottle like a message in a bottle. I placed that inside the box.
Now came the messages. I wrote those out on the pieces of aged cardstock paper and tied them up with orange, yellow and brown bakers twine and scattered them into the box. Lacy and Andrew opened one of the scrolls in the box but everyone said they should open one a year but they decided to open one every six months and I added 18 total. I had written Disney character quotes about love, life and friendship on the scrolls.
Andrew and Lacy liked it and everyone did! Once we explained what it was they thought it was a cool idea lol! So this can be a really cool personalized gift made for any occasion and to suit any type of person. Michaels has like 3 or 4 different size treasure chests and even other boxes to suit and so this is so versatile and a lovely gift for sure.
