Spring 2019 Love Never Fails Shadow Box and Mini-Topiary’s!

I was watching YouTube for the first time on our new Roku TV, a gift from my sister and brother in law. They were getting rid of her TV after they got married and using his TV and her wi-fi wouldn’t reach their bedroom so they knew we had an older TV borrowed from my parents and had no cable or internet so they helped by giving us the Roku TV so we could get internet and TV which was beyond nice. So anyway while watching YouTube for the first time on the TV I looked up Dollar Tree DIY and the first thing came up was a really cool Shadow Box creation using picture frames and I fell in love with it immediately. I think it was by Kelly Barlow Creations was the channel but anyway she made a shadow box using picture frames and river rocks and scripture stickers Love Never Fails 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 from Dollar Tree and then clearance scrapbook paper for the backs and it looked so cute. I decided oh I must try that and add that to my spring inspired crafts on my living room table.

Now hers was a tad darker in color as she was going for a more farmhouse outdoors riverside look and I really wanted something more bright. So I went to Dollar Tree and picked up three identical 8 X 10 frames though looking back I wish I had painted the frames to make them brighter and still can but I think Ill leave them as is. So after getting the three frames I then saw some white rocks and I decided they would go perfect better than the brown river rocks or black Zen rocks so I picked up a pack. I had already decided on what would be in the foreground which would be a beautiful scrapbook paper with solid light blue with white dots and these pretty cascading pink flowers so the white rocks would accommodate it very well.

So after I got home I looked at how to make it one more time and the link will be below so you can watch her do it. So basically you take the first two frames and remove the metal prongs that keep the glass in but let the third frame keep its prongs. You hot glue the inside corners of the first frame and put the glass down, for the other shadow boxes I made I glued the sides and corners because as you see the glass shifted after the frames were already glued together and came out and my husband tried to glue it back and so excess glue is seen in the corners so after that I put extra glue on the sides and corners but not so much it seeps over the sides. After you glue the glass you then take each frame and put tacky glue on the frames and place the next frame atop it until all are atop each other with the frame with the glass on top. Then you can wipe away excess glue that seeps out the sides, I used wet Q-Tips to remove mine.

Once the frames are completely dry you can clean off the glass with glass cleaner inside and out and once dry the fun but to me complicated part of putting the sticker to the glass begins. The love never fails stickers were big and so after figuring out how I wanted them placed I carefully laid them down and the tricky part is making sure your finger prints aren’t all over the back of the sticker and frame which fortunately with this one it didn’t turn out that way but another I did it kind of did and it bubbled even though I tried to put it smooth but I did manage to get the bubbles out almost completely on the other one and it still looks good.

Once the stickers are down you flip the frames face down and put in the rocks of choice and I did the white ones. I then took and using the backs of the frames I laid it against the part of the scrapbook paper I wanted and traced it and cut it out and glued it to the front of the backs of the frames and put that down and closed the prongs and eyeballed it and decided to add more rocks so I opened it back up and did that but also decided at that point to add another 3D element. I added a few Cherry Blossom flowers and made it looks as if falling atop the white rocks and after a few maneuvers they stayed and looked good. So I added the back back on and because of the weight of rocks I took the second back and put it on behind the first to keep the rocks from falling out and that was it. I know my explanation is way longer than the ladies original but I like to be real on my efforts to make something and do step by step, lol!

So this shadow box can be done in countless ways and I am going to be adding very shortly a few more Shadow Boxes I created, one for a friend and another for my husbands grandma. So make it your own and create something unique to you!

Mini-Topiary’s!

This is a double post only because these items go together or at least for me and I wanted to share them together. So these are simple. I saw many larger versions but when I was looking around Dollar Tree I stumbled upon a pack of three small white buckets in the Wedding Sections as these are used to hold favors normally and I bought them not at the time thinking I can make a topiary but after I made my shadow box it came to me to make mini-topiary’s.

I added some wet foam to the bottom of the bucket and then filled the rest with lime green mini-rocks that resemble the stones you put in fish tanks. I then took the dowel rods and cut them down to the size I wanted and then stuck it into the foam and rocks. I then took a small foam ball and covered it in glue and rolled it in some moss and then took more glue and moss and hand applied where it didn’t stick and once it was dry completely I stuck it into the top of the dowel rod. To accent it and add similar elements as the shadow box I took two Cherry Blossom flowers and placed them into the green rocks. I could have stopped with one but I decided to do two and place one on each side of the Love Never Fails Shadow Box!

These are super simple and easy to make no matter the size or materials. I placed it originally on our living room table but its home now is a pretty cool new craft/furniture item that will be going up soon, lol!

Oh and sorry again the backdrop isn’t the best we had an old mattress going in the trash but had been waiting to place it out and for a few crafts sessions it was in the foreground lol.
